Merewether wedding photographer: Surf, baths and headland

Lumenry is a Merewether wedding photographer, and from the studio in Cooks Hill the beach is about ten minutes away. Merewether suits couples who grew up in the water or near it: a morning swim before hair and make-up, a ceremony close to the sand, and portraits on the rock shelf and the shoreline while the surfers come in.

How a Merewether wedding photographer reads the beach

A bride throws her arms up and laughs with her bridesmaids in green dresses on the sand, the sea behind them

Merewether is a surf town inside a city, and on a wedding day you feel both: the swell on one side and the terrace houses climbing the hill on the other.

The beach runs north from the rocky point at its southern end, where the ocean baths are, past the surf club to Dixon Park and on to Bar Beach.

Behind it the suburb rises steeply toward Merewether Heights, so many streets have a view straight down to the water. South of the point the houses stop and Glenrock begins: bush, a lagoon and a beach you reach on foot.

Every one of those is close enough to walk or take a short drive between, which means a Merewether wedding can move from salt water to tall trees in under fifteen minutes.

Five Merewether frames, from the point to Bar Beach

  1. Merewether Beach

A broad surf beach with the headland and rock platforms at its southern end.

When a wave drains back off the flat sand it leaves a thin sheet of water that holds the sky, and we walk you along that line for the reflections.

  2. Merewether Ocean Baths

A big main pool and a smaller one beside it, set into the rock platform and often called the biggest ocean baths in the southern hemisphere.

We use the straight edges and the walkway between the pools as lines that lead to you, with the open sea just past the wall.

  3. Dixon Park

The middle stretch of beach between Merewether and Bar Beach, with a grassy reserve on the bank above.

It's usually quieter than either end, and the grass gives the older guests a place to stand for group photos without sand in their shoes.

  4. Bar Beach

The next beach north, smaller than Merewether, with sandstone cliffs at its northern end and the high ground of the city beyond.

The cliff face gives warm, textured rock behind you, and it's only a short drive up the coast road.

  5. Glenrock

Bushland, a lagoon and a quiet beach just south of Merewether, managed by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service as a state conservation area.

Tall trees, ferns and creek crossings make it feel nothing like the beach ten minutes away, and the shade is welcome in summer.

Merewether Beach faces the open Pacific, so the sun comes up straight out of the sea and goes down behind the hill.

In the late afternoon the houses and the ridge put the sand in shade well before sunset, which gives soft, even light on the shoreline while the sky over the water turns pink and pale blue.

For direct golden light we climb a little and use the headland or the top of the baths. Early mornings are calm, bright and almost empty, the best time for a couple who want the beach to themselves.

Merewether weddings, the questions we get

Are the ocean baths ever closed when we want photos?

Sometimes. The baths are drained and cleaned from time to time, and big seas can close the walkway along the rock platform. We check with the City of Newcastle and look at the swell in the days before, and if the baths are out we use the headland and the sand right beside them.

Can we do a sunrise session at Merewether before the wedding?

Yes, and it's one of the best things you can do on this beach. The sun comes up over the water, the swimmers are only just arriving and the light is soft for an hour. It suits an engagement session, or a quiet first look before the rush of the day starts.

How do we keep surfers and swimmers out of the background?

We use the angles. Shooting along the beach or up toward the headland keeps most of the water behind you, and the baths' wall blocks the surf line from low down. On a busy summer weekend we also lean on the quieter Dixon Park stretch, where there's usually more empty sand.

Do we need permission to take wedding photos in Glenrock?

Glenrock is a state conservation area run by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, and commercial photography and events in parks can need their approval. A couple and a photographer on the tracks is different from a ceremony with guests, so we ask National Parks about your plans before the day.

Is the rock shelf safe in wedding shoes?

Not really. The rock at the southern end is uneven and slippery where it stays wet, and waves can wash over it without warning. We have you walk out in flat shoes or barefoot, keep you well back from the edge, and carry the good shoes for the photos where they show.

Should we pick Merewether or Bar Beach for portraits?

You don't have to choose: they're a few minutes apart. Merewether gives the baths, the headland and the wide, open sand; Bar Beach gives the sandstone cliffs and a smaller, closer feel. Most couples like a little of each, and we'd plan the order around the tide and where the light is falling.

Walk the wet sand toward the point.

Tell us your date and how much of the day you want on the sand, and we'll match the shoreline portraits to the tide and the shade off the hill.
