Is the Caves Beach Hotel the same place as Caves Coastal?
Yes. The hotel on Mawson Close was rebuilt in 2008 and 2009, reopened as Caves Beachside Hotel and now trades as Caves Coastal Bar & Bungalows. Many people still call it the Caves Beach Hotel, which is why you'll see both names. Weddings are booked with Caves Coastal directly.
Will there be time to reach the sea caves for portraits?
Only if the tide and the swell allow. The caves at the southern end can only be reached at low tide, and even then rough water can wash into the entrance. We look up the low tide for your date months ahead, and on the day we decide on the spot, putting your safety ahead of any picture.
Which ceremony spot is best for photos?
They each give something different. The boardwalk is closest and simplest, the beach is the most relaxed, and the hilltop gives the widest view for bigger groups. We'll stand in each with you before you decide, at the time of day you plan to marry, so you can see the light for yourselves.
Is a permit needed to marry on the hilltop?
Yes, a hilltop ceremony needs a council permit. The venue's wedding packages include arranging that permit, subject to availability, so book early if the hilltop is the one you want. A beach or boardwalk ceremony gives you a fallback if the date is taken.
What happens if it rains?
The venue's packages include a wet weather option for the ceremony, so you won't be standing in the rain. For portraits we'd use the venue's rooms with ocean views, and keep an eye on the sky: coastal showers often clear fast, and the light after a storm over the water can be remarkable.
Can our bridal party get ready on site?
Yes. Caves Coastal has bungalows, villas and townhouses on the property, and the venue says all of them are a walk from the ceremony and reception spaces. Getting ready on site means we can photograph the morning, walk with you to the ceremony and never lose time on the road.
